We watched the new movie Odyssey together: Corwin, Emma, Mariah, and me. This was after church and a rushed lunch at Panera for Corwin and me. I had selected the movie house at Bridgeport Village, a high-end outdoor mall with seats open in the back for the 70mm showing on Sunday afternoon. Corwin was at the house when I arrived after church; we then boarded Air VW the Gray and got lunch. I rushed mine, drove the two traffic lights to Emma’s place, got her, and then headed back to pick up Corwin on our way to our highway odyssey of 217 to 5. Unlike most days, it was not busy, and we did not get a slow tour of Beaverton cement canyon.
Parking was a surprise; it seems that the mall is again a destination, and other retail spaces, I believe, should have a look at what they are doing right at Bridgeport Village. Wow, no parking outside. I finally snagged one in the parking garage! I cannot imagine what Christmas will be like here!
Mariah is running slow and will miss the first minutes of the movie (with her parking karma working better than mine), but nothing that was important. The seats work, and Emma invested in a drink and a popcorn (not knowing the size); I had many handfuls of popcorn.
The movie is great and shows the strange mix of modern and ancient. The messy storyline and too many characters from Homer’s version are obvious complaints, but weak ones. The framing is more piles of stones and plain forts than the elaborate old Hollywood Roman repainted as Greek settings. There are references to 1177 BC, and the collapse of the Late Bronze Age is alluded to by Dr. Eric Cline (here), and the battle scene at Troy, to me, alludes to archaeological sites being created to be found later (Troy 6-7ish). And while I wish the story fit better, Homer’s best lines are missing, but if Hellen launched a thousand ships, at least that many new readers of Homer were launched by the movie.
After the movie, just under three hours long, and be warned, the 70mm version has no trailers; it starts on time. We found a table at the Sushi place a minute from the theater and ordered too much food. We even did dessert. It was fun to just chat with Mariah and Emma, meeting for the first time.

I hadn’t finished the blog and had other paperwork to work on. We broke up around 7:30, and I took Corwin and Emma back. I finished the blog and more Ted Lasso episodes followed once I was home and Corwin off to feed and walk the dog. I read more of The Civil War by Bruce Catton and can see the different spin than other books I have read, and many judgmental words without reference or explanation. Still, the story is moving well and narrative. I think the book is used more as a reference with its hundreds of pages of timelines, events, and maps. There are no quotes in the text. Still an interesting read.
With that, I slept, woke once, and then woke again after sunrise.

Rolling back (to use a computer term), to the very start of Sunday, I rose from my comfyness after 7 and closer to 8. I made the coffee by grinding beans roasted and assembled in California, Hidden House Coffee’s House Blend, Santa Ana, CA (here). And while not liberal coffee, the darkness and bitter flavors do remind me of how far the USA has to go to find Justice with Mercy and to remember that the greatness of a country, according to God, is by how it treats the widow, the orphan, and the stranger, not its great buildings or victories. But I digress.

I started the blog but did not make enough progress. I nexted an update on the movie and received a pile of pet pictures in exchange while at church. I had showered, dressed, and all that before heading out to church in the EV. I wore a recently purchased vintage tie with animals that I later gave to Corwin.
We were having a send-off for Michael R, and that was the focus of the service. I had two homeless folks and ushered, so I was busy most of the service. I thought the service was too focused on Michael R and was a bit confused, but I was busy and could not follow much of what was happening.
After that, I headed home as I had to meet everyone, and that takes me full circle.
Thanks for reading.
